Nutritional Sensitization and Good Hygiene Education at Abuja's Lugbe Grammar School
One of the key projects the Food Scheme undertakes each year is community outreach and sensitization. The project's goal is to educate the most vulnerable people about proper nutrition, sanitation, and cleanliness.
Lugbe Grammar School sensitized students on how to live a healthy lifestyle. 98.6% of students don't have food poisoning and 94.4% wash their hands daily. 95% washed their hands at least 7 times a day after the sensitization.
On November 13th, 2020, Food Scheme launched a sensitization effort at Lugbe Grammar School to educate youngsters about excellent hygiene. The goal was to sensitize and educate youngsters about the importance of nutrition and proper hygiene, which is one of the organization's goals and objectives. It was also to teach the children the necessity of good hygiene during the pandemic and how to protect themselves by practicing good hygiene such as hand washing, social distancing, and eating healthy and nutritious meals. The COVID- 19 protocols were strictly followed. Social separation was enforced, as was the usage of face masks, hand washing, and the use of hand sanitizers.
The Lugbe village in Abuja is a small one, and the youngsters knew little to nothing about sanitation and nutrition. Lugbe Grammar School is a government school where the majority of the community's youngsters receive their education. As a public school, the government lacks necessary facilities to promote excellent cleanliness. This made it difficult to practice appropriate hygiene in school and in the community. They also believed that nutrition was only for the wealthy people of society, and they lacked information about adequate nutrition. This is why the feeding system was established in order to teach the children in school.
There were 15 volunteers and 10 dietitians involved in the initiative. 500 kids between the ages of 10 and 19 were divided into 50 groups, each with one nutritionist, for evaluation and interaction in order to assess their nutritional knowledge and teach them on how to consume, prepare, and live a balanced meal plan. It was a hands-on educational experience. They were taught that proper hygiene is essential when it comes to food preparation. It assures that the food being consumed is safe to ingest.
Poor food handling and eating hygiene can contribute to the spread of bacteria that can cause food-borne diseases. What youngsters eat in their early years may have long-term consequences for their health. It is also the period during which general dietary habits are developed. It is critical to nourish young bodies and minds with nutritious foods. Physical activity and staying hydrated are also vital for children's health. A balanced diet is one that includes a variety of foods in specific amounts and proportions to meet the body's needs for calories, proteins, minerals, vitamins, and alternative nutrients, with a tiny allowance for extra nutrients to last the short period of leanness.
